Bomont – On a night when Lamar’s crime is fighting, the cardinals leaned against their defense to overcome a two-digit deficit and defeat Eastern Texas A&M, 61-58, in overtime on Saturday night in the Montana Center.
The Cardinals, now a total of 11-9 and 6-3 in the Soutland Conference, have succeeded in outsmarting the Lions, despite the challenging performance of 20 out of 58 (.345) from the pitch. Lamar converts 7-from-20 (.350) long-range attempts, while Eastern Texas A & M ended at night 19-from-56 (.339) from the field and 7-from-31 (.226) of the three-point range.
Lamar only scored two field goals in the overtime, but it was two more than the lions could collect in the extra five minutes. The Cardinals held East Texas A&M to 0-4 in sequels and only 9-from-28 (.321) from the pitch in the last 25 minutes of the game.
The cardinals also overtook the lions with eight, 44-36, with 12 offensive struggles. They recorded 10 thefts and forced 15 turnover, leading to 16 points. Although the lion’s bench surpassed Lamar’s 32-8 reserves, the Cardinals prevailed.
Junior Alexis Marmoleos led the cardinals with 24 points. Cody Penebaker and Ja’sean Jackson contributed 10 points. Junior Andrew Holyfield, limited to only two points, took 10 games.
The Cardinals gave up 11 points in the first half, but trimmed the deficit to four, 27-23, until half. After the Lions restored their lead to nine at the beginning of the second half, Lamar answered 10-0 to ask for his first lead at night. Lead exchanged his hands during adjustment, with Lamar standing with a 1:10 dot. Eastern Texas A&M has tied the game of the free throws, but blocked three Holifield index finger sent the game in overtime.
In overtime, no team scored in the first 1:32. Marmolejos gave Lamar the lead to the free throw line. Although the Eastern Texas A&M tied the game once in the overtime, the cardinals never gave up the lead, providing victory.
The Cardinals are back on Monday to host the Northwest State, and the competition has to give up 19:00 at Neches Arena.
