Meet the Roast Bee Champion from 2025 in Leon County, Elementary Fifth Class of Lake – WCTV

Tallahassee, Florida (WCTV) – Buck Lake Elementary School Gordon McLeod celebrates its new title: 2025. Leon Schools Champion County Schools.

He took a gold medal and a shiny trophy last month, but he did not come without hard work and preparation.

Gordon won a spell with his classmates at Buck Lake Elementary in the northeast end of the capital. He then continued to compete in the competition throughout the school before going out on January 16th.

“I would start crying because I was so happy. With the last word, my father just jumped, he already knew I would write it correctly, “said the 9-year-old.

The earned word was “above.”

Gordon said he sacrificed his winter vacation to study and prepare for the big day. He had support from his friends, church family and his parents.

His father, Chris McLeod, said Gordon reads from the age of 3, so this achievement is not surprised.

“It’s just a question to help him with our self -esteem,” said Chris McLed. “Gordon is a very intelligent child, so there has never been doubt in my mind that he cannot win it.”

Gordon’s mother Yanela McLeod said she was extremely proud to see her son’s hard work.

“We left him to play and have fun, but we also had to inform him that he was responsible to prepare, and he was hanging out there and doing great,” said Yanela McLed.

Gordon will write in the regional bee, where he will compete against other children from the whole country. The champion said he was already referring to his strategy.

“I will study much more difficult words, find the origin of words, and learn the prefixes and mentors of words,” Gordon said.

The regional spelling bee will be held on Saturday, March 8 at 11 am in the public media of WFSU in Talahasi, located on 1600 Red Barber Plaza.
