Columbia – Governor Henry McMaster has joined the challenge of participating in planned parenting in the Medicaid program, filling a brief amicus curiae in Medina v. Parentagesaid in a message from his office.
The case focuses on South Carolina’s decision to ban abortion providers, such as planned parenting, from its Medicaid program, and seeks to confirm the powers of the state to set policies that reflect its priorities.
“This case is to protect the holiness of life and preserve the right of South Carolina to rule itself in a way that reflects the values of its people,” McMaster says in the message. “[T]Axpayers should not be forced to subsidize abortion suppliers who are in direct opposition to their beliefs. “
The case stems from an executive order MCMaster, issued in 2018, which directs the State Department of Health and Human Services to remove abortion clinics from the list of Medicaid suppliers, the statement said. In December 2024, the US Supreme Court agreed to hear the case. Oral arguments are expected in late March or April this year.
