Mayor of Hyaliah Esteban Bovo has confirmed that he will withdraw from his position to move to Washington, Colombia County to be with his family.
Bovo, who has been mayor since 2021, made a message after weeks of speculation about his departure. He told the anchor of Telemundo 51 Alejandra Molina in an exclusive interview that the decision was led by personal reasons, emphasizing his desire to be more close to his relatives.
Miami Herald has announced that BOV will join Southern Group, a prominent lobbying company in Washington, which has greatly expanded its influence after former President Donald Trump’s administration. Sources show that BOVO’s new role will come with a compensation package that exceeds its current salary as mayor of Hyalia.
Deeply included in the Cuban-American community
Bovo, a Cuban-American, has been a key figure in South Florida’s policy for more than two decades. Born to Cuban parents, he has participated deeply in the Cuban-American community, advocating policies that support small business, economic growth and conservative values. It also advocates to preserve the history and experience of the Cuban exiles, emphasizing the importance of sharing their stories with future generations.
Miami
Before becoming mayor, Bovo served in the District Committee in Miami-Dad from 2011 to 2020, where he focused on infrastructure, transport and economic development. Previously, he also took a seat in the House of Florida from 2008 to 2011, representing the district of 110, which included parts of Hialeah. In 2020, he was running for mayor of Miami-Dad District, but lost to Daniela Levine Kava in a highly contested race.

Over his time, as mayor, Esteban Beovo prioritized public safety, economic recovery and quality of life for Hyalai residents. His departure leaves a precipice in leadership in one of the largest and politically conservative cities in Florida, raising questions about the next steps of the city.
It is unclear whether Hyalia will hold special elections or appoint a temporary mayor to complete his term. City authorities have not yet released an official transition plan.
