United were the dominant side in the first half against Birmingham City Women and duly got their reward when Hales swept over to open the scoring.
After coming on in the second half, Sibley secured all three points with his first goal for the club when he pounced on a loose ball in the area and beat Birmingham’s last man on the line.
An even start to the game saw Birmingham’s first chance of the game after eight minutes when Ivana Fuso brought out Lily Ag in the box after some good footwork, but the latter’s shot went high over Claudia Moan’s post.
However, United opened the scoring through October Player of the Month Sela and the team’s top marksman Hales.
Beth Lumsden was able to create a yard of space down the right with some quick steps before picking out Hales from the penalty spot and she swept home on the first pass.
The hosts looked to equalize almost immediately when Fuso pounced on Ston’s loose pass from the back, but the United keeper recovered well to tip the Brazilian’s shot wide of the post.
Birmingham thought they had leveled on the half-hour mark through Ag, who saw her header cleared off the line by Charlotte Potts.
The Blues flew out of the traps in the second half and needed to hit back, but Tegan McGowan managed to steer her first-time volley just wide of the far post.
Just five minutes after the restart, Birmingham continued to hit the goal, but this time Fuso’s deflected cross bounced back onto the crossbar.
Within two minutes of the second half, Fuso could have put Birmingham ahead. First, the Brazilian was found in acres of space heading for goal, but Moan stood tall and deflected her sparkling effort into the corner.
Moments later, Birmingham’s number 13 was again free at the back post, but despite having time on the ball, Fuso grabbed her effort which went wide from close range.
Just as the game approached the hour mark, Birmingham went close once more. A free-kick hit the back post, but Neve Herron could only clear his header off the post and over the goal line.
Not even 20 minutes had been played in the second half and Amy Merricks’ side were denied a goal three times. This time it was Tegan McGowan’s audacious strike from 25 yards that beat Moan but bounced off the crossbar and away to safety.
Despite constant pressure, it was Newcastle who counter-attacked and doubled their lead.
Lumsden cut in on Martha Harris from the left and unleashed a powerful shot that bounced off the post to replace Sibley who took one touch before crashing over.
It was almost double the treat for Sibley two minutes later when she again found herself uncovered in the box, but what looked like a sure goal was denied by a last-ditch Birmingham block.
