We are currently looking at two diametrically opposed visions of our future. As federal coordinator of elections for Chesapeake Action Network Action FundI advocate for the policies we need to ensure a sustainable future for all of us. Climate change is real and we see its effects daily around the world; but for too many elected officials they have chosen spread lies and deny science.
Which brings me to November 5th and why Chesapeake Action Network Action Fund leaves everything on the field to ensure the future of our children and grandchildren. We know who Donald Trump is and what he stands for. We know who Kamala Harris is and what she stands for. As a climate activist, I believe it is my duty to organize like never before and do everything I can to stop Trump’s second term and successfully elect Kamala Harris.
For my colleagues and I, this means spending our weekends in the great community of Pennsylvania. Although I may not understand Sheetz-Wawa convenience store debate, I understand that our neighbors, in perhaps the most important swing state of all, are struggling just as we are in Maryland, to a better future. So we wake up early every Saturday and head to Pennsylvania where we team up with the advocacy organization For our future Pennsylvania to knock on doors. We have a shared commitment to a better world for all of us.
Choosing Donald Trump is dangerous for so many reasonsnot the least of which is that the next four years will shape our nation’s climate action for years to come. Kamala Harris demonstrates it deep commitment– both in words and actions – to move us towards a sustainable future. It is difficult to overstate the importance of Vice President Harris casting vote for adoption of the Inflation Reduction Act. With his passing, Harris secured the largest investment in clean energy in our lifetime and set us on a path to sustainability.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has repeatedly called climate change is a hoax and has signaled his desire to gut oil rules in a move aimed at making his wealthy donors even richer.
Additionally, Donald Trump’s Project 2025 (which, like science, he chooses to deny), clearly lays out what a Trump administration’s environmental actions would look like. And it’s dark. Essentially, as stated by Center for American Progress,
If implemented, the policies of Project 2025 would harm all aspects of US international engagement, including climate cooperation among countries addressing climate challenges, funding to help vulnerable communities around the world, national security measures to protect of defense assets and geopolitical interests, and trade policies that focus on workers and job creation. These harmful proposals are united by a common theme: the abdication of global climate leadership in favor of big oil and gas companies.
Donald Trump is an existential threat to the environment (and much more). His “plan concepts” are the opposite of forward thinking Vice President Harris’ plans. And that’s why our team of volunteers gets up every day to knock on another door in Pennsylvania. Don’t let anyone tell you that one person can’t make a difference – it may be a cliché, but it’s the truth. I’ve had so many exciting experiences talking to Pennsylvanians during this campaign, and each of those conversations inspires me to take on another list of walks and knock on just one more door.
I was recently talking to a woman who was carrying her groceries and she started our conversation by saying that she wasn’t sure who she was voting for. By the end of the conversation, she was a strong supporter of Harris-Waltz. But it wasn’t really anything I told her. I was just listening. She outlined the issues that were important to her and came to her own conclusions. Sometimes that’s all it takes. This was a busy person running errands over the weekend, and once she stopped to consider what was at stake, she was all set for Kamala Harris.
Our volunteers each weekend are guided by the principles of justice and progress forward that Kamala Harris represents. So far our team has been winning well 12,000 doors in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania because we know we are stronger together. We are better together. And we won’t be back.
