Maryland – A proposal in Maryland’s legislation can expand residents’ ability to change the sexual marker on their birth certificates by adding an option outside a man or woman.
The Law on Modernization of Birth Certificates will introduce the name “X” for transsexual and unprecedented persons. While Marylanders can now change the sexual marker in its birth certificates, the bill will codify these defenses and remove the requirement for medical records to make the change. This will also guarantee that the documents do not show whether a person has previously changed his sex marker.
The legislation allows minors to change their sexual marker with parental approval.
Proponents say the bill is an important step towards recognizing and inclusive.
“People need to realize that we are developing, changing, growing, and we hope that these markers will reflect this,” says Mark Delancs, a member of Salisbury Pflag, LGBTQ+ advocacy group.
However, some deputies are opposed to the measure, claiming that it is a distraction from more problems.
“I do not know why we would be focused on this legislative act,” said State Senator Mary Beth Carosa, a Republican representing the east coast. “I am currently hearing from hundreds of voters. They want us to focus on resolving Maryland’s budget crisis. They want us to focus on Maryland’s energy crisis. “
Carrhosis also expressed concern that the bill could create complications for the Ministry of Health in Maryland.
“I believe this can lead to even more confusion,” she said. “I do not want the Ministry of Health in Maryland to focus on the act of gender birth. I want the Ministry of Health to focus on the crisis with fentanyl and other health priorities we have in Maryland. “
Currently, the bill is on a committee both in the House of Maryland and in the Senate. A similar measure was introduced last year, but it did not go.
