A man accused of shooting into a crowd at a party, killing one person and injuring five others, was arrested by Baton Rouge police officers working extra security at the event who saw the shooting, an affidavit said.
The shooting happened just before 4 a.m. in a parking lot at 9702 Greenwell Springs Road where a food tent was set up.
The victim, 35-year-old Dexter Cormier, was transported to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries, police said. Five other people were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The suspect, 24-year-old Michael Robinson, “admitted to shooting the victim after hearing someone shoot while he was waiting for his food at the food tent,” the affidavit said. Robinson told officers he didn’t know why he “locked on” to the victim because the man didn’t shoot him.
Officers also reviewed the business’ surveillance cameras before making the arrest.
Robinson, of 2703 Weller Avenue, Baton Rouge, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail on a charge of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, police said.
