Winston-Salem, NC energy at Bowman Gray Stadium was an electric Saturday night.

For the first time in 54 years, NASCAR returned to Winston-Salem and fans couldn’t get enough. They appeared to cheer their favorite drivers, feel the thunder of the engines and be part of the history of the races.

“I’m so excited. I think we’re about to make the story tonight. Nascar finally returned to Bowman Gray,” said Vera Mahafi, who lives in Winston-Salem.

NASCAR, who returns to Winston-Salem, is not just a big job-it’s a story in the creation, and the fans here know it.

From locals to visitors who have traveled hundreds of miles to observe the qualification circle, the excitement was tangible.

The Bowman Gray Stadium is no unknown to the racing. In the spring and summer, people pack the stadium to watch competitions, but the last time NASCAR competed here was in 1971.

Now fans hope this is the beginning of a new tradition.

“We are back. He is coming back to the roots that NASCAR has been a long time ago and it’s really good to see them return to a historic place like Bowman Gray Stadium,” said Robert Lam, who lives in Johnston County.

What makes this song stand out is its size. Only a quarter of a mile is the shortest runway in NASCAR and fans said that made it a thrill.

“They want to see competitions and so few short songs that they are there. They have to go back to many more short songs,” said Aj Pittman, who lives in Wilson.

“This will be some beating and bumping. There are not many or three wide to happen tonight unless you break through a hole, so it will be really good racing with action,” Lam added.

The qualification round is in the books, and the official race is at the pace to start Sunday at 8:00 pm
