BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Magic City Classic brought thousands of fans and millions of dollars to Birmingham this week.
Some of the businesses said it was one of their biggest weekends of the year. All the fans sticking around and getting in on the action in the classic City of Magic creates a huge boost.
CBS 42 saw long lines and plenty of great food and merchandise for sale around Legion Field. Businesses from convenience stores to food trucks took advantage of the large crowds. Small businesses like Let’s Try Dobbie’s say the impact on their business is felt well past when the game ends.
“It’s huge, it’s getting my name out there, it’s getting people to try my food. I also make condiments and marinades, so I like to have the crowd taste my condiments and all that stuff,” said Nicky Sam Dobose, owner of Let’s Try Dobbie’s.
All the businesses we spoke to said they had a great week here at the Magic City Classic and can’t wait for next year’s game. Business wasn’t the only one enjoying all the fun in Birmingham at the Magic City Classic.
For some, the highlight of the event is the queuing that occurs during the game and in the days leading up to it.
Thousands come from all over the country to enjoy the festivities and cheer on their favorite team. CBS 42 spoke with one person who says the tailgate not only provides a fun time, but is good for the Birmingham area.
“It’s good for Birmingham to have something like this that will bring people from across the states. You have people from Indianapolis who is like my brother-in-law, then I have a couple of cousins who are from Ohio who are across the way, then I also have and I have two from Texas who are on lot F,” Keith Pettway said.
Saturday’s game ended with a 27 to 19 victory over Alabama A&M over Alabama State.
