Magic City Classic fans say they feel safe, BPD reports ‘no major incidents’ – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The 83rd Magic City Classic is now over and law enforcement officials say the city’s biggest annual event has been pulled off safely.

The Birmingham Police Department said there were no “major incidents” at Legion Field on game day.

At least a day before the game two people were shot and injured at two separate locations not far from Legion Field, but police said those incidents were unrelated to the Classic.

Bulldog and Hornet fans the same said they felt comfortable in the game.

“We’ve always got to be safe, you know, alcohol comes into play,” Alabama A&M fan Amber De Vaughn said. “I feel safe, absolutely.”

“Birmingham does a really good job of security here, and so yeah, we feel safe,” Alabama State fan Christopher Jones said.

Multiple agencies attended the game.

Birmingham police officers could be seen patrolling on motorcycles, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office had its mobile operations center on the premises.

The sheriff’s office said it has a helicopter, additional deputies, ATVs and drones for the event.

Fans could also be seen going through the metal detectors that surrounded the stadium. There was a clear bag policy.

“We were here last night until 10:00 last night and we felt safe,” Alabama A&M fan Richelle Williams said. “We had a good time, we came back today, we walked to the parade, so we really felt safe. We really did.

Some fans stated that they never felt the need to question their safety and that they wish the Magic City had more events like this.
