Casper, Wyo.-English are preparing for the Mac Attack 2025 fishing competition in the Flaming Gorge tank, set for February 15-17.
Sponsored by Buckboard Marina, the competition aims to help manage the fishing of the tank by promoting the harvest of small lake trout, according to the game and fish in Wyoming. The event follows the model of the successful Burbot Bash and offers fishermen a chance to win prizes while contributing to the health of fisheries.
The competition is distinguished by four categories of Lake Trout Lake, with the highest payment going to the team, which captures the largest lake trout under 25 inches. There are also two categories of Burbot, the largest Burbot and Raffle Burbot.
While the icy conditions vary throughout the tank, the fishermen are reminded of cautiousness and checking the thickness of the ice before they come out.
“Healthy and abundant populations of Cokani and the reserved trout in the future depend on the harvest of fishing for a small lake trout now,” says the biologist of regional fishing of Wyoming and Pisces. “The department encourages fishermen to target and collect a small lake trout to take advantage of all the fishing, including the Trophy Lake Trout component.”
Aiming a small lake trout
Little lake trout, under 17 inches, is abundant in a blazing gorge, especially on the slopes of the rocks where they gather in large schools. Fish are usually located at a depth of 35-65 feet, although fishermen are advised to move until they find active fish.
To maximize their success, participants should use smaller lures – 1.5-3 inches for small lake trout and 2.5-4 inches for 17-25 inches of fish – try spoons and jigs wearing tubes or skins , especially those who glow, and direct all the lures a small piece of fish meat to play Wyoming and fish.
The bite of the lake trout often begins early, even before sunrise and can continue throughout the day, especially on cloudy days. They tend to move deeper as the day progresses. The baits that glow in the dark can also be effective.
Additional tips for fishing for lake trout can be found on the flame gorge management page or contacting the Green River Game and Fish office on 307-875-3223.
Registration and participation
Registration is available online or personally at Buckboard Marina. The fishing hours are held from 5am Saturday, February 15, to 10 am Monday, February 17th.
Donation opportunities
Fishermen are encouraged to hold the lake trout they capture as they are a delicious source of omega-3 fatty acids. After checking their fish, participants can donate any unwanted lake trout that will be available for both participants and non -participants during registration every day.
Since lake trout has a status of a nugget in a flaming gorge, there are no restrictions on the number of fish below 28 inches that fishermen can harvest or own.
