Lubbock stimulates student teachers to stay – The Daily Toreador

With incentives from Lubbock’s independent school district, including paid residences, early contracts and signing bonuses, the majority of Texas Technology teachers choose to find a job in Lubbock after graduation.

The Tech College of Education requires students to make a year a student who teaches their senior year at the college where they work in the classrooms for four days a week, along with his teacher as a mentor, said Sher Heider, a facilitator of professional development of professional development Tech Teach.

As part of Tech Teach, most students’ teachers are placed in ISD Lubbock and continue to work there after graduation.

Information from the Teachers’ Preparation Program, shown in the 2023-24 school year, 87 students who have completed technology within three years of data collection work in ISD Lubbock. Although not so recent, more EPP data from 2020 shows that the five best graduates in the Tech area went to teach at ARE Lubbock, FRISCO, Lubbock-Cooper, Fort Worth and Northside ISD in San Antonio, respectively.

Even without open positions in ISD Lubbock, Donna Brasher, director of Tech Teach, said students could receive an early contract for future employment while teaching students.

“They will offer them an early contract to ensure that they will remain with ISD lubbock, even if they do not have an open position,” Bracher said. “They know that positions will open or create positions so that our candidates do not lose.”

Although not common, the area can offer a bonus for signing highly effective students if they will return to work in the field after graduation, Hayer said.

One of the biggest ways Lubbock ISD holds student teachers, Hayer said, has paid residences that allow students to receive funds while they teach.

“The paid residences have definitely brought an incentive to the students for student training,” Haider said. “Sometimes, not everyone, the area can say, ‘I will provide you with a paid scholarship. I would like to commit to teaching our area for one to three years before graduation. “

Gabriela Degrosa, a junior education specialty from San Antonio, said the incentives of Lubbock ISD, more specially paid the residence, will compensate for some financial problems, while allowing her to focus on teaching students without requiring other work.

“One of the beautiful things with the Tech Teachs program is that when you are a senior, you can apply for teaching stay,” Degrosa said. “Lubbock ISD, Lubbock -Cooper, all ISDS mainly around Lubbock, are involved in this.”

Brash said that Lubbock ISD offers these incentives for Tech to teach students because of the strict standards of Tech, training and strong partnerships with nearby areas. In addition, the graphics shared by the Texas Education Agency said that Tech Teach students are superior to other programs in the growth of students with mathematics.

“This is the reason why locals and other areas are looking for our candidates,” Bracher said. “There are data that show that they are really better than others throughout the country.”
