This is a rough week for the St. Paul Restaurant scene in Lowertown. First, the owner of the Tim Niver restaurant announced the official end of its decades St. St. Dieza. Now another restaurant with a 10-year Lowertown cycle has announced its own closing date.
Dark Horse Bar & Eatery, at 250 E. 7th St., will end in two weeks.
“This was not an easy solution and we are all completely broken by the heart,” a post on social media from the restaurant said. “This business is not for the weak-hearted business, and we gave it absolutely the best of this, as Paddy would say-” good experience in college in Ole. “
Paddy Wilan and Sarah Srantz discovered Dark Horse in 2015. They also had muddy waters at Uptown Minneapolis; This tape closed in 2020, a victim of the pandemic.
In an interview with Pioneer Press in 2016, Grantz said Wilan had convinced her to open another place. “He was really interested in St. Paul, especially in Lowertown. I was almost durable, and then I fell apart after seeing the building. It was so beautiful, ”Srantz said at the time.
The dark horse, in a brick building from the 1880s, quickly became known as a place to collect neighborhoods, with towed and meat raffles, a few scents of wings and hours in the late night, all under towering ceilings, sports chandeliers and open beams. The road courtyard was another draw for the locals.
In the announcement, the comments of Dark Horse fans shared memories of their time at the bar.
“Polly dog says she will miss Paddy to take her slice of bacon every time she sees her,” one client writes.
