Casper – The Wyoming Game and Fish Department would like to thank the National Federation of Diva turkey (NWTF) for the generous donation of 2000 dollars to help buy a live turkey trap. This donation will improve the constant efforts to manage and relocate wild turkeys that have embarked on the urban areas of Casper and outside, guaranteeing the safety and well -being of both birds and residents.
“We are incredibly grateful to NWTF for their support and commitment to protecting wild turkey,” said Brandon Werner. “This new live trap will play a vital role in our efforts to deal with the growing challenges caused by wild turkeys in the Kasper and around the state, if necessary. It allows us to capture and move these birds to more appropriate habitats where they can thrive. “
The donation comes as urban meetings with wild turkeys are becoming increasingly common. In 2024, the game and the fish caught and moved over 140 from Casper and the surrounding areas. These adaptive birds are attracted to urban areas for food and shelter, sometimes causing property damage or conflicts with residents. This wild turkey trap provides a safe and effective solution for capturing large groups of wild turkeys in residential areas where nets can be challenging. It enables wildlife staff to move birds to reduce these conflicts.
NWTF, a leader in the conservation and restoration of the wild turkey population, has long supported sustainable practices for wildlife management. Their contribution emphasizes their dedication to the promotion of healthy ecosystems and support of communities, as they exist in conjunction with wildlife.
“Supporting the game of Wyoming and fish with the management of accustomed and unpleasant birds is not only important to reduce the public impotence of wild turkeys, but this effort also guarantees that these wild animals remain wild. In addition, it is an additional benefit that many of these birds can be moved from their urban environment to areas that provide public hunting opportunities, “adds David Nikonov, the district biologist with NTWF for Wyoming.
Property damage has occurred at houses, vehicles and trees around Casper. The residents around Casper are reminded of:
- Remove food sources: Do not leave bird seeds, pet food or other attractors. Nutrition of wild turkeys is prohibited in the city of Casper.
- Avoid feeding wild turkeys: Eating wild turkeys can lead to getting used to and increase conflicts.
- Scare wild turkeys away: Use spray -enabled or other deterrents to protect wild turkeys from yards.
Game and fish will use the donated trap in neighborhoods where wild turkeys cause problems and damage. Residents are encouraged to report fears about wild turkeys for play and fish at 473-3400.
