A ranch in Verdi called Reno Rescue uses the positive power of horses and ponies to support some of our most vulnerable citizens, children in foster care.
Stable Moments begins its second season this fall with much promise for this therapeutic program.
Twenty local children learn about horses and how to care for them at Reno Rescue, where more than 40 neglected and abused horses call home.
Children bond with one horse and a trained volunteer mentor for one hour each week for 10 months.
They feed, maintain and train their horse or pony. They can choose to do other activities on the ranch if they want. What remains constant is the fresh air, the camaraderie and the opportunity to be in a non-judgmental, relaxed environment every week.
Stable Moments is just one program at Reno Rescue.
The non-profit organization is supported almost entirely by private donations.
They do have some riding lessons and summer camps that help keep it going, but they depend on local business sponsorship and the community to keep it going.
Thursday, November 7th, there is a fundraiser at Ranchharrah for Reno Rescue.
There will be speakers, appetizers, cocktails and a silent auction.
