The aircraft, which collided Wednesday over the Potomak River near Washington, was a CRJ-701 bombing plane carrying 64 people and a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter. It is not yet clear how many people were killed.
Fatal catastrophes for commercial planes in the United States have become rare. The most recent crash took place on February 12, 2009 near Buffalo, New York.
This incident saw the Colgan Air Bombardier DHC-8 Propeller aircraft that crashed into a house, killing everyone aboard, including 45 passengers, two pilots and two flight attendants. Another person on Earth also dies, leading to 50 cases of death to 50.
In August 2006, a COMAIR aircraft crashed on take -off to Lexington, Kentucky after leaving the wrong track and escaped from the end. Two crew members and 47 passengers were killed.
And in November 2001, a flight to American Airlines collided with a residential area of Belle Harbor, New York, just after the departure. All 260 people aboard the aircraft were killed.
