John G. Riley Primary School in the Northwest Talahasi works with 102% capacity with 627 students currently enrolled.

With the school above the capacity, school administrators in Leon are striving to restore more than 200 students in the fall. Parents’ information forums will be held this week.

“If any child zoned for John G. Riley’s primary school actually went there, this school will be the size of a high school,” said the Deputy Chief of Schools in Leon Michel Gail District during a school review meeting meeting Tip on Monday.

There are currently over 1700 children zoned for Riley. For context, Rickards High School has a registration of 1705 students.

Riley’s main school zone extends along the edge of the Interstate 10 to Gadsden County.

“We are looking to move 206 children, but keep in mind that we are also looking to add before K,” Gail said.

The resonant discussion emerges when the area begins to look at ways to bring a program before Kindergarten to Riley. This is the only elementary school in the area without a classroom before K in its campus. The students before K, zoned for the neighborhood, go to the Wesson campus, an early training facility located on South Meridian Street.

To reduce enrollment, the area offers to redirect 21 students to FT. Braden, 122 students at Sabal Palm and 63 students in Astoria Park.

“I am so glad that we are conducting this discussion. It was quite overdue and so important,” said school council member Rosana Wood.

The changes will happen before school starts in August, but parents can choose to keep their children in Riley, even if they are outside the school area through the school selection policy. They must apply for this until April 18. But they will have to provide their own transport.

Not all students will be accepted in Riley. The area hopes that parents living in the resonance areas will enroll their students in their new neighborhood schools, leaving room for options for choosing a school open in Riley.

Riley Primary School is located at 1400 Indiana St., his most rating from the state is C.

The area will host Community forums to inform the parents and give them the opportunity to ask questions about bus transport and more.
