Birmingham, Ala. – It may not be the result that Birmingham Legion FC has foreseen when it arrived at a protective stadium, but there were still positives to take away at 2-0 loss to Atlanta United on Saturday to find their pre-season from 2025 slate.

“I saw a lot of positives and very good energy,” said Legion’s chief coach FC Tom Soen. “You always learn from the group, and this has emphasized some areas we are still looking for to improve.”

In the first half, which saw the starting staff for Birmingham, there are four players from the first team who make their debut at the club, including forward Sebastian Tregarten in their first professional trip, Atlanta grabbed the opening goal in the 25th minute with Cayman Togashi aimed at A free kick from Ronald Hernandez outside the box.

The visitors then doubled the lead in the 80th minute through their own goal.

However, Legion FC is happy that they have achieved a full match under their belt and are looking forward to building this newly opened foundation.

“You disappoint because you lost the game and wanted to give the crowd something to cheer,” said midfielder Enzo Martinez. “The atmosphere was great, the level of the game was high quality, but the most important thing was the things we saw as a team and get 45 minutes against an opponent with so many guys in the squad. It’s a big thing so, this It was a lot of positives and things we know we can work and that’s all you can ask.

With a brand new eleven eleven, to start the second half, Birmingham found his rhythm in the match with a few early chances and almost equalized by the attacker Luka Durodo in what was his first professional experience. Getting a counter -attack pass, the former Central Florida star took the ball to the left before cutting inside the box. His right shot defeated the outstretched hand from Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan, but was rolling just out of office and out of the game.

“I felt butterflies for the first 10 minutes or more,” Durado said of my first Birmingham game. “I didn’t have the feeling that from my first college game, which was four years ago, so it was good to have it again like” You did it. ” So now with that off the road, it’s all just going and keep going to improve and find ways to help the team win. “

For the match, Legion FC ended with six total shots and a pair in Target, while Atlanta countered with seven of its 10 shotguns.

Birmingham managed to use all three goalkeepers on Saturday, with veteran Matt van Okel playing all the first half, while Trevor Spengenberg and Fernando Delgado split the time in the second.

“We are in the world where we are compared to so many teams I have had in the past,” Soen explained. “This allows us to jump into the next phase and build the attack. This provided some good starting points that allow us to move forward more than we have in some areas before.”

Then

Legion FC will return to the pre-season on Saturday, February 8th, against MLS next pro-side Chattanooga FC. The match will be held at the Legion FC training facility (1021 Dunnavant Valley Rd., Birmingham, AL) and is open to season ticket holders.
