Laredo, Texas (KGNS) – Larendo’s police welcomes a new member of The Force, Oynx. The four -legged employee who can help the police gather evidence by finding electronics.
The department shared that these types of dogs are not as common as the K-9 drugs, only 12 departments are selected in the United States to obtain these types of training.
Onyx is one of the youngest recruits at Laredo Police Department, only two years old and already in the area helps employees conduct investigations.
The Labrador is a member of the electronic storage block and can find even the most hidden devices with a simple walk around the room.
LPD officer and Onyx leader Stephen Garza explained that Onyx had already provided the paw to other agencies. “In this area, we have helped several of our agencies here, two of which are federal agencies, with HSI and FBI. We helped them in cases, and Oynx helped them. ”
Investigator Joe Baesa of Larendo police explained that Onyx is an important asset, especially in a highly digitized world.
“This is a kind of example of a blanket, but the easiest to explain is if you have a case of someone trying to hide childhood pornography, it’s all electronic. They don’t have photos, but instead they will hide it in files, USB and mobile phones, “Baesa said.
Onyx can help in search orders, help the police gather more evidence, or because of his previous work experience as a dog for therapy, he can support the victims.
Whether it is a flash drive hidden in a hair brush or a second mobile phone that is removed away, Onyx will find it indoors, outside or even in water.
Garza adds that Onyx can blow the chemicals used to make electronics, saying: “As soon as you start it, you start to see when they are in the scent and they start to follow the path. This time, it will eventually bring them to the device or everything that is hidden. ”
As a young officer, his training will continue to become a greater advantage of power.
The department adds that the origin of Oynx as a former therapy dog has also made it a great companion and a hit in the community.
