Law enforcement urges pedestrians to be extra careful as it gets dark earlier due to the end of Daylight Savings Time – KY3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Law enforcement is advising the community to be extra careful when walking or biking on the streets as Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday at 2 AM

Nelson Garland walks his dog in the park all the time. He said other pedestrians should be aware.

“Just do what makes sense. Don’t do anything stupid and don’t move in front of vehicles,” Garland said.

Joyce Nelson is a mountain and road cyclist and says she has a plan when she rides the streets.

“When we’re in a group, we always announce when there’s a car behind us and go into single file,” Nelson said.

Daylight saving time is more than just changing the batteries in your smoke alarms

Sergeant Ben Haynes of the Springfield Police Department is urging drivers to check their cars now.

“You have to check your lights probably once a week to make sure they’re all working properly so you can see clearly,” Sgt. Haynes said.

If you are crossing the street as a pedestrian, be sure to use the marked crosswalks.

“Cross the signals, don’t cross against them,” Sergeant Haynes said.

He also recommends walking in the direction of traffic, not against it, so you can see approaching cars and not be surprised from behind.
