Laredo, Texas (KGNS) – A new bill will provide over $ 10,000 to parents to help pay their children’s education at a private school.

A Senate Bill 2, a policy that aims to use public funds to give the vouchers to parents who allow them to pay for private education, recently passed through the Senate of Texas. However, some Larendo public school employees weigh what this can mean for their funding.

Critics of the bill say that with public schools facing budget issues, the attraction of state funds will only further cripple the ability of the public school to provide the necessary programs.

The chairman of the trustees of the United ISD Council, Javier Montemayor, says that public schools are already facing a budget deficit, mentioning: “We are looking at the challenge of losing students, increasing our decreasing enrollment. Maybe even more teachers’ shortages. These are some of the immediate effects we will have. ”

The bill will provide $ 10,000 a year for each student, $ 11,500 for disabled students and $ 2,000 for home students, giving priority to low -income children and special education.

A Larendoan, Juan Vargas, was on the program fence and worried about how the funds themselves would be allocated.

Vargas added that he would like such a program to help him with training when his children were at school. “I have not had a better education than I have, so I wanted them to have a good education. I have three children and all three went to college. ”

Meanwhile, the UISD member for the district 7, Daaanel Martinez, has caused different concerns. Although anyone can apply for the program, not everyone can take advantage, more special students with special needs.

“Let us be honest, our private schools are not equipped with the resources that these students need. I know from personal experience because my son has ADHD and that’s why he was in a private school. I had to take him out and put him in a public school, “Martinez said.

Montemayor explained that the focus should not be a school choice but to improve the current public school system. The Senate Bill 2 will still have to receive approval from the Chamber Committee before moving to the lower committee.
