LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – Some members of the Laredo City Council want to stop certain projects to help bring money into the utilities department.
Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino and Councilman Alberto Torres support this idea, which would stop projects that are not considered urgent or just for aesthetics. The specific projects that will be stopped will be decided by the council.
Not all council members agree, however. Dr. Tyler King, Councilman for District 6, expressed concern about the impact of the plan, saying the funds potentially freed up by stopping these projects would be limited and may not be meaningful to the utilities department. “Let’s not kid ourselves that we’re going to solve this problem by funneling $5 million to $10 million of essential needs through the rest of the departments and we’re just going to fix this with crumbs,” King said.
The pause for non-essential projects will not include those funded by grants, as they often have strict rules that can result in financial penalties for delays.
