Laredo Cemetery Opens for Día de Muertos, Rules Reminder – KGNS

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – As families prepare to honor loved ones for Día de Muertos, city officials are reminding everyone of important local cemetery rules.

Many Laredo residents set up colorful altars, or “ofrendas,” decorated with photos, marigolds and favorite foods of those who have passed.

And this year, as before, the city cemetery will work from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. to assist visitors. This gives families time to pay their respects and join in this special tradition. Decorations include bright flowers, wind chimes and spinning wheels to welcome the departed.

Noraida Negron, spokeswoman for the city of Laredo, stressed the need to respect and follow guidelines during this sacred time. “We cannot have any barbecues on site or have open fires and no alcoholic beverages are allowed on site,” Negron said.

As the community comes together to celebrate, everyone is encouraged to follow the posted rules to ensure a safe and meaningful experience. Extended cemetery hours allow families to remember and properly honor their loved ones.
