Marriage, Murder and Fly Paper: The story of Lady Blo -Brada, the first known serial killer of Idaho

Anna Dali writes: While Idaho is the home of some incredible people who have had tremendous effects on our history and the future of our community, he was also home to more … scandalous characters.

One of them is Lida Southard (also known as Lady Bluebeard) – the first known serial killer in Idaho and the first known female serial killer in the United States.

She suspects that Southard killed four husbands, a son -in -law, and her daughter, taking a arsenic poisoning found in the fly and puts it in their food. The nickname “Lady Bluebeard” comes from French folklore for a rich man with a blue beard who marries and kills his wives.

Southardt, who was born in Missouri, first came to Idaho in 1912 when she married her first husband and settled on her brother’s ranch in Twin Falls.

A few years later, in 1915, her 3-year-old daughter died of dirty water supposedly, and her son-in-law died that year of supposed nutritional poisoning. A few months later, her husband died of typhoid fever – leaving Southard to collect the life insurance policy from the three deaths.

Between 1915 and 1920, Southardt married three more men who, within a few years of marriage, all die of the so -called “typhoid fever”.

“When the Tif took Lida’s fourth husband, Edward F. Mayer, the insurance companies became suspicious,” an article from a 1941 magazine, “She was appointed beneficiaries in all her husband’s policies. Meyer’s stomach research revealed the amount of arsenic, which, staff, was probably extracted from the fly. Police went looking for Lida. She had left the city. ”

After being found in Hawaii with his fifth husband, Southard was taken back to Idaho, sued and convicted of second -degree murder. When she was found guilty of the murder of Mayer and sentenced to 10 years of life, she divorced.

“For the first time, he received in 1921 for the murder of her fourth husband, she showed modeling behavior and won the privilege of taking care of the landscaping of the Women’s Department,” a publication on Facebook by the old pen Aydaho. Notes. “She demanded a grid and used a smuggling saw provided by a friend (a male prisoner with reliable status) to escape from her cell and climb the wall.”

Escape to Colorado, she found a job as a widow housekeeper who lived with her mother and son. Shortly afterwards, they got married and he pulled out an insurance policy with Southardt as a beneficiary. In the end, she received a message that the police knew where she had fled to Kansas, and her (sixth) husband then received a cancellation of their marriage.

Returned to the penitentiary in 1931, Southardt was serving the time until 1941, when it was released on a probationary period and received a pardon.

Southardt died of a heart attack in 1958 and was buried in Twin Falls.

According to the old Idaho Southardt penitentiary, he is one of the longest-held women-packed for 18 years, 7 months and 23 days.
