Although Saturday, January 18th, it was a rainy and dark day, the beautifully decorated Hansel Tookes Student Center at Florida University A&M provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the 100th anniversary of Ladies Art and Social Club, Inc.
A place was chosen on the campus, as it was on the campus of Florida A&M College Ardel Lee, the wife of President Jre Lee Sr., Organized the Ladies Art and Social Club on December 24, 1924.
When members and guests arrived in their evening clothing, they were greeted with melodic singing by Lily Forbs, ending with Celebration to start the program of the evening.
President Jerrlyne Jackson chaired the celebration, which included Barbara Hunter, welcoming and May Williams, providing the call and grace. While the attendees enjoyed a colorful and delicious buffet food, a slideshow was aired on the big screen depicting the 100 years of Ladies Art and Social Club.
After dinner, Sharon Robinson, wife of 12 on Famuth President and member of the club, shared historical reflections. Sylvia Petis paid a commemorative tribute to the 14 members who passed in 2004 (the 1980sth Anniversary).
Betty Smith presented vases with red, pink and white roses to Margari Elkins (the oldest member of the club), Edwin Martin (a longtime member who could not attend-the daughter-in-law Carmen Cummi Martin for her) and Jerline Jackson (for her leadership in turning the centenary holiday into reality).
The immediate former Famu president Larry Robinson was elected to offer “toast for 100 years” because of his knowledge with the club, including the first lady Sharon hosted several of the December anniversary meetings at the President’s House.
The evening ended with a prayer of the club; However, the guest slowed down in chat and photos – a sign of a nice evening.
