LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – A first grade teacher with more than two decades in the classroom got a surprise to be named Teacher of the Month for October.
Mrs. Gage Canales has spent the past 27 years at United Day School.
Canales received numerous nominations from parents who spoke highly of her teaching methods.
Specifically, they talked about her methods of not only teaching her students to read, but instilling in them a love of reading.
Canales said seeing how empowered children feel when they know how to read inspires her to continue teaching.
Noting, “I am very, very blessed to have been able to teach children how to read. When they learn to read, they gain powers. I found it very satisfying to be told that I had been voted the teacher most likely to live in the school last year. I love what I do. I stay up late. These are the children. It is very helpful when children are excited to read and the joy of learning is there. It inspires me to come to work every day.”
The prize, sponsored by the Joey Tellez Law Firm, comes with a $250 gift card and a basket of goodies. You can nominate a deserving teacher here.
