As we are entering the New Year and the schools are returning for a new deadline, I would like to share with you an invaluable initiative and an opportunity that I encourage schools in Durham and Darlington County to take advantage.
The Alice Ruggles Trust program for the pursuit of school meetings, jointly funded by me and the police in Durham, is an ongoing project where trained volunteers deliver free meetings in secondary schools in our area.
The project aims to prevent people from falling victim to persecution by providing knowledge, awareness and understanding of young people about persecution and harassment. The program provides young people with the tools that are needed to recognize, understand and respond to the behavior of persecution, allowing people to protect themselves and others from this type of crime in the future.
The pursuit affects over 500,000 young people every year, often leading to emotional, psychological and sometimes physical injuries. Through this program, students in secondary schools throughout the county learn to identify warning signs for persecution, understand its illegality, and know where to seek help, if necessary. By directly dealing with these problems, I support a proactive approach to teaching young people for healthy relationships and give them confidence to recognize and respond to the behavior of persecution. This project is part of my commitment to combat persecution and improve education for healthy relationships in Durham and Darlington County.
I admit that persecution and harassment are increasing concern and are considered a serious crime that disproportionately affects women and young girls, in addition to young people most common in secondary schools. I believe this project is a key step in building a future in which young people feel confident in their ability to manage relationships safely and with respect.
Alice Ruggles Trust has a long -term purpose to give one generation the confidence to recognize forced control and persecution. They are aware of the need to enable the victims of pursuit to seek help much earlier and to build a society that reacts the right way when they do.
If you are a student or parent of a student, I encourage you to talk about this initiative with your school. Schools wishing to organize a meeting or learn more about how to get involved in this vital initiative are invited to contact:
