Join the conversation: Risks of a coastal storm… – Virginiabeach.gov

One of the challenges that the coastal city like Virginia Beach faces is to control floods, waves and erosion. The U.S. Army Engineering Corps, in partnership with the city, offers residents the opportunity to learn about the study of the risk of the risk of a coastal storm (CSOR), to ask questions, and most importantly, to share feedback. Public engagement events will be held:

  • February 3, 18-8 h, High School of Kelam, 2665 West Neck Road
  • February 5, 18:00, High School in Campsville, 5194 Main Trail
  • February 6, 18-8 pm, WT Cooke Primary School, 1501 Mediterranean Avenue.
  • February 8, 10am

Dealing with Storm Risks: The Mission of the Study

The study is working to develop practical solutions to manage the impact of coastal storms for residents, visitors, business and development of the land. It reports past, current and future risks of the coastal storm, including changes in sea level, and evaluates projects that already exist. The study began in 2022 and will take at least three years to determine which solutions are feasible for the area. The study seeks to:

  • Assess the problems, opportunities and future risks in the area.
  • Formulate potential plans to deal with the risk of storms through a combination of structural, non -structural and natural characteristics.
  • Recommend the best authorization and construction plan.

Know before you go

On December 16, 2024, Usace, along with the city of Virginia Beach, held the second of two virtual public meetings to discuss the progress of the study. A recording of this meeting is available for a YouTube review.
