John Tonve marks 27 as No. 17 Wisconsin defeats Northwest – Field Media

John Tonche had 27 points and reserve Carter Gilmore added the 15 years of his career, as No. 17 Wisconsin had a sluggish first half to save the Big Ten 75-69 victory over Northwestern on Saturday in Evanston, Ill.

Max Clessmith added 11 points and Nolan Winter 10 for Wisconsin (17-5, 7-4 large ten), which avoid the third consecutive road loss.

Jalen Leach had 23 points, Nick Martinelli 15 and Tai Berry 14 for the northwest (12-10, 3-8)

Wildcats’s Brooks Barnhizer (leg) sat in the game and will also miss the rest of the season.

Wisconsin went to an ice cold start and left 31-25 on the break, for the season low for points of both halves.

Gilmore struck another 3-indicators, and Kleismith limited 8-0 with two free throws to bring Wisconsin to even 46 with 11:45.

Gilmore followed a missed departure to give Badgers his first lead from the second half at 54-52.

Gilmore, a senior, whose previous high career was eight points, drained another 3 more, then added two free throws to the next possession to push the lead to 64-55 with 5 1/2 minutes.

Leach’s 3-Indication pulled the northwest within 73-67 at 1:36 to the left.

Tonje struck two free throws with 19.3 seconds to lift Wisconsin 75-69. Badgers, # 1 in the country at a free throw rate of 84.6 percent, are 18 out of 21 of the line, including 14 out of 16 in the second half.

Northwest popped up to 8-0 lead, as Badgers missed their first five shots.

Wisconsin, who had only seven points at 2 at 16 firing in the first 12 1/2 minutes, gathered for a 18-15 lead, as Tonje scored 11 straight for Badgers.

Tonje extended its series to 16 consecutive points with its fourth 3-chain of halftime to tie it to 23.

The northwestern struck six of their last eight shots for a 31-25 half lead.

Tonje was 5 out of 10 in the first half, including 4 out of 7 from deep. The rest of the team was 3 out of 18. Wisconsin also turned it nine times before the break.
