Birmingham, but. (WBRC) – Since freezing temperatures are back this week, the mission of the city of Birmingham and Jimmy Hale opens a shelter for warming to protect our homeless community from the cold.
The mission is an average of 30-35 warming evenings a year and we are already heading for the 29th of the year. As we are already approaching the average, CEO Perin Carol expects to exceed it by the end of 2025.
Carol says she is not sure in the last winter that we had so many frigid days in such a short time, adding that they still wash blankets from all the nights of the warming station in January.
Mission Jimmie Hale opens their shelter for warming every night when it hits or falls below 32 degrees to protect our most vulnerable population. They even help those without transport by offering a free shuttle from 18:00 – 19:00 from the main entrance of Lin Park.
Carol says the number of homeless in the area has increased since last year. They are on average about 100 people a night.
“I think part of this is the economy,” she explained. “Housing costs are increasing. Food costs are increasing. I mean, we all know what increased your food bill. Medicine costs are increasing. Many of the ones we serve are older, so they have more health problems. “
To continue to take care of this vulnerable population, Jimmy Hale’s mission needs help from you. If you feel guided to give, you can Donate financially to their websiteS
You can also miss out on physical donations such as blankets, coats, water and soft fruits and snacks at 3420 2nd Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35222.
The mission now allows the pets of our homeless community to join them in the warming shelter. Carol said that when they started doing this last month, more people sought asylum as they did not have to leave their fluffy friends alone. She called it a victory for everyone!
