Baton Rouge, La. (BRPRoud) – Jaguar Cube was born in the Zoo Baton Rouge for the first time in over 30 years.

“This birth is a symbol of the hope for the species and emphasizes the critical role of zoos in the conservation of wildlife,” said zoo director Jim Fleshman.

Zoo staff said CUB would stay with his mother to contact the next two months before making a public debut in the spring of 2025. People could help name the cube in the “name JAG” competition. The winning name will be announced on January 1st.

The last time the local zoo welcomed a Jaguar cube, the animal was transferred to the Zoo in Jacksonville for a manual increase.

According to IUCN, the Jaguars are listed as an almost endangered species. The International Animal Human Relationship Fund lists common threats to Jaguars such as poaching, deforestation and murder of revenge. Baton Rouge’s zoo wants to raise awareness of the problems that Jaguar’s populations face around the world with the new cube.
