Florida Leonard Hamilton’s Men’s Basketball coach believes it is time for a new voice to run Seminole’s basketball and that the weather was right for him to withdraw from the program.

Following the victory of Seminoles 67-60 over Notre Dame on Tuesday, Hamilton said he did nothing without thinking, and he decided to resign at the end of the season with full confidence.

As he said, it’s time for a new start for FSU and yourself.

“It’s just time. It’s time for Florida basketball to have a new voice,” Hamilton said. “It’s time for the best for Florida and I also think it’s the best for me.”

In his 23 years as a seminoles chief trainer, Hamilton published a record 456-209 in FSU, going to three Sweet 16, winning the ACC tournament in 2012 and the regular ACC crown in 2020.

He said that while the success of the court is a privilege, his ability to complete almost all his students and encourage lifelong relationships during his term in FSU is something he is most proud of.

“You have no idea that the joy of him comes to college at college and takes teenagers and introduces them to a young adult,” Hamilton said.

“I enjoy when they want to be at their wedding, you want to meet their fiancĂ©. With the sincerity he called me and wished me a happy birthday before he passed, and that means so much to me.

These are the things you are developing along the way that goes far beyond everything else. I am proud of the fact that we had only one player who did not graduate, who stayed with us for four years. I am proud of the fact that I think we are trying to develop relationships that are not a four-year relationship, they are 40-year relationships. “

He said there were still players who were calling him since his days as an assistant in Austin Pius and all his previous stops. These connections are what he said are meaningful in the coaching business.

As he is proud of this, Hamilton said he saw a change in the “atmosphere” of college sport.

Hamilton admitted that he had more questions than answers to the current state of athletics in college, and wanted to go away to criticize something he said that everyone should learn and experience.

In the navigation of the search for a new coach, FSU athletic director Michael Alford said on Tuesday that Hamilton was “remarkable” and he is a special part of the university. He admitted that finding someone who reflects his achievements in Talahassi is not an easy task.

Alford said Seminoles has already heard from the coaches who are interested in the job, and he hopes to have a new rent quickly and that he wants Hamilton to be part of the transition.

“Every coach who is interested in this position is interested in him for the sake of him. 23 years and they know that they will inherit something that is in a good place,” Alford said. “They also know, as he mentioned, I talked to him about helping the transition. I want him to be part of it. I want him to always feel welcome to this university and this basketball program and this is part of the move forward.”

Both Hamilton and Alford have said they have discussed Hamilton’s departure not only this season but also in recent years.

While the Seminoles program is moving forward, Hamilton said there were no opinions about the qualities he wanted to see in the next Seminoles chief coach, but he believes the program will make the right choice.

In the meantime, his focus remains on the termination of the season strong and potentially puts the team able to do something special in the papers.

“I want to be available, but my main focus right now is to finish this season,” Hamilton said. “To complete the work I was hired to do.”
