Mbeumo’s second, which came with 96 minutes on the clock, arrived after Brentford initially fought back from two goals down against the opposition looking for a first win of the season.
George Hurst scored to put Sami Schmodics up for Ipswich before Yoan Visa and a Harry Clarke own goal drew Frank’s men level.
Clarke, who was later sent off, conceded a penalty which Mbeumo converted before substitute Liam Delap’s 86th minute equalizer looked to be enough for the Suffolk club to share the spoils.
But in the sixth minute of stoppage time, Mbeumo crossed into the box which caught Arijanet Muric off-foot for the winner. Despite Delap hitting the post minutes later, Brentford managed to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat at Manchester United last week.
Speaking after the win, Frank said: “We’re in the entertainment business so we thought we’d give you something for the money. It’s easier to be on the winning end than to be Kieran (McKenna); I feel for him and he works as hard as I do.
“I thought they were better than us in the first 40 minutes and they were 2-0 up. On the other hand, we were poor and it was one of our worst 40 minutes in the Premier League.
“We showed a great mentality, a great personality and it was a fantastic comeback in many ways. Football is ruthless.”
Mbeumo’s brace made it eight in nine games of the season for the Cameroon international, and Frank spoke of the “impressive” striker who was able to fill the boots of Ivan Toni, who moved to the Saudi Professional League in the summer.
When asked if Mbeumo should be considered one of the best in the league, Frank added: “I hope they do. How many goals is there now, eight in nine games? That’s extremely impressive from a winger in a team in the middle of the Premier League, that’s not normal.”
The result means three successive defeats for Kieran McKenna’s promoted men and just four points from 27 so far.
Calvin Phillips, who is on loan from Manchester City, started and played well on a day that began amid reports that his deal could be terminated early.
“This is proper nonsense. I learned a while ago in football that you can write something online, it can circulate. This is complete nonsense, there were no such conversations,” McKenna said.
“It’s disgusting not to get points from the game because the goal came so late the way it did. The biggest feeling I hope to feel on Monday will be pride.”
McKenna also added that Chieo Ogbene has suffered a serious Achilles injury.
