Phoenix – Arizona’s legislator is afraid of immigration and customs application (ICE) is racially profiling members of the tribes after she was aware of a woman from Navajo who was detained at her workplace in Scotsdale.

Arizona Senator Teresa Hatatley received a phone call from an integral part of Navajo Nation, who shared the story of her niece. Hatli said she had contacted the woman to get more information, but said the woman did not want to be identified or report the incident of a proper fear of revenge.

Navajo’s wife’s work was attacked by ice in Scotsdale on January 22nd. At least 14 people were arranged in front of the vans to be questioned, eight the woman believed that they were Indians, including herself.

The woman said she was able to send her aunt’s text before her phone was taken away.

“So, she continued to say,” I’m Navajo, I’m Navajo, I’m from Navajo Nation, “Hatli said.

The woman had no tribal documentation on her. Aunt informed the woman’s mother what was happening, and the mother sent her daughter a picture of her Indian blood certificate.

Navajo’s wife had returned her phone and showed the ice agents a picture of her mother and was eventually released. The woman was emotional after the incident and had a panic attack.

Hatatley has heard similar stories that are happening on Navajo Nation and in North Arizona near Flagstaff. She recommended that the members of the Navajo tribe carry a copy of their Indian blood certificate with them and keep a digital copy of their phone.

“Because in a panic state, I think the majority of people catch their phones,” Hatli said.

Ice, in a statement to Ktar News 92.3 FMHe said he worked with federal and tribal partners for implementation actions.

“If the extremely rare case arises in which immigration and application of customs may need to work with tribal partners in an immigration case, ICE will try to consult and decontaminate the FBI, the Ministry of Immigration Council Justice and tribal leaders such as the plan was developed before all the targeted law enforcement actions, “the agency said.

The incident with Navajo’s wife is not an anomaly, Senator says

The Senator asked why she did not hear such stories of Jewish, Swedish or Russian people who were detained by ice and were questioned about their citizenship.

“And if you look at all the photos or stories, they all include people who have brown skin,” Hatlie said. She did not see evidence that other ethnicities were harassed.

Race profiling is nothing new to indigenous Americans. Hatli said that a higher rate of indigenous population was stopped by the police where it was in North Arizona because their skin is brown.

A Navajo man was detained and deported to Mexico a few years ago as he had no identification, which means their control, according to Hatati. She said it took him about two years to return to the country.

She said tribal nations should report to the US Department of Homeland Security about what their tribal counts look like because it differs between tribes.

Navajo members may receive their ID card to carry with them if they are stopped by ICE.
