This speaks to the final era of college sport, with an additional admissibility season awarded for those who played through a pandemic campaign that the two most experienced male hockey players at the University of Wisconsin were not on the ice for senior night honors on Saturday.
Owen Lindmark and Anthony Amhir, who played Saturday in their 170th and 163rd career matches for Badgers, respectively, have already gone through the ritual, marking the final home game in the regular season in previous seasons.
Daniel Laatsh and three players who have transferred to their last season – Ryland Mosley, Cody Laskosky and Tommy Scarfone – received the spotlight in the pre -game ceremony. It was something that had to give a boost to play in front of a large home crowd.
There was nothing like Badgers in flat performance, which led to the greatest defeat in their last 110 games at Kohl Center. Loss with 6-1 notre Dame took the curtain in the home career for six players, without including an exhibition game against the US team under 18 next Sunday.
Does it hurt more that the final show at home is a bust? Amhare didn’t go there, at least publicly.
“I’m just grateful for my time here,” he said. “The game in front of the center of the call is special. I just soaked it for the last time. Every time you lose, it’s a pity. But we will grow, we will learn and prepare for the playoffs.”
If Wisconsin looks like something like the team that plays on Saturday when Big Ten Fitterfinals opened March 7th, his next season will be short.
Badgers played 509 games in the center of Kohl since 1998. Saturday was only the 10th time when they lost five or more goals and the first after 7-1 defeat against Minnesota on February 10, 2018.
There are two other senior dinners in this unpleasant group of 10: North Dakota sprayed Wisconsin 5-0 in 2003, near the end of Mike Aev’s tumultuous first season as a coach, and Minnesota tucked Badgers 7-1 in 2018.
Like 2003, the home crowd was removed from the game with an early goal by visitors and the destruction of the back near the end of the opening period. Zach Parise made 2-0 for North Dakota with 0.9 seconds remaining in 2003; Justin Yickee put Notre Dam forward by 2-0 with 5.6 seconds left on Saturday.
“This is what we started playing back early,” Badgers coach Mike Hastings said. “The first or second opportunity ends up in the back of your network. We have been fighting for us to respond.”
The senior night was rough for the fourth, fifth and six players. Lindmark took a penalty and was minus-3. Mosley was also minus-3. Amhair scored his first goal of the season, but it was on the ice for Notre Dam’s reply nine seconds later. Laatsch is for the season after undergoing surgery in January and Lasko has played only in one of the last 11 games for injury.
The Irish scored four of their first 12 shots of Scarfon, which received the hook in the third period.
Badgers finished season 6-9-3 at home. Any chance to build an inertia with a second win in a series in the center of Kohl has dropped out. Three were connected, one was a loss of overtime and then what happened on Saturday happened.
“I don’t know if there is an explanation for it,” Scarfon said about home fights. “At the end of the day, they all have something to give. We are all badgers, we are here to win. We are all winners in the room.”
Scarfone then turned his thoughts in the Big Ten playoffs, where Badgers will play as six in a series in a series in third place, which will be resolved after the last game of the regular season next week. Ohio State, who defeated Wisconsin in the center of Kohl in three matches last year’s quarterfinals, ranks third after the matches this weekend.
“At the end of the day you win four games, you are the Big Ten champion,” Scarfon said. “We look forward to playoffs now. Nothing we can’t do about the past. We have to focus on our future.”
Badgers have not yet won four games in 2025, keep in mind, so the playoffire would be miraculous.
Hastings told his players to make sure that they show gratitude to family members who attended the festivities of a senior night, which did not turn out to be terribly festive.
“There were many people tonight and it’s too bad that it happened the way it happened,” he said. “But the season is not over and we have to rest and prepare for the playoffs.”
