Israeli drone strikes Gaza clinic during polio campaign, Palestinians say – Irvine Times

The Israeli army denied responsibility.

The alleged strike took place on Saturday in northern Gaza, which has been encircled by Israeli forces and largely cut off for the past year.

Israel has been waging another offensive there in recent weeks, with hundreds of people killed and tens of thousands displaced.

The conflicting accounts could not be resolved.

In southern Gaza on Sunday, an Israeli strike hit a group of people gathered outside in the eastern Khan Younis neighborhood, killing at least eight Palestinians, including four children and a woman, the Gaza Health Ministry’s emergency services said.

Nasser City Hospital, which received most of the bodies, confirmed the data.

Israeli forces repeatedly attacked hospitals in Gaza during the war, saying Hamas was using them for combat purposes, claims denied by Palestinian health officials.

Dr. Munir al-Bursh, director-general of the Gaza Ministry of Health, told The Associated Press that a quadcopter struck the Sheikh Radwan Clinic in Gaza City early Saturday afternoon, just minutes after a UN delegation left the facility. .

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN children’s agency Unicef, which jointly run the polio vaccination campaign, have expressed concern over the reported strike.

“The reports of this attack are all the more disturbing because the Sheikh Radwan clinic is one of the health points where parents can vaccinate their children,” said Unicef spokesperson Rosalia Bolen.

“Today’s attack occurred while the humanitarian pause was still in place, despite assurances that the pause would be observed from 6am to 4pm.”

Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said that “contrary to the claims, the initial review found that (the Israeli army) did not strike the area at the specified time.”

A scaled-down campaign to administer a second dose of polio vaccine began in parts of northern Gaza on Saturday.

It has been postponed since October 23 due to a lack of access, Israeli bombardment and mass evacuation orders, as well as the lack of guarantees for humanitarian pauses, the UN said in a statement.

The first dose was administered in September in the Gaza Strip, including areas of northern Gaza that are now completely isolated.

Health officials said the first round of the campaign and the administration of the second dose in central and southern Gaza were successful.

At least 100,000 people have been forced to evacuate from areas of northern Gaza to Gaza City in the past few weeks, but around 15,000 children under the age of 10 remain in northern towns, including Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun, which are unavailable, according to the UN.

The latest phase of the polio vaccination campaign aimed to reach an estimated 119,000 children in the north with a second dose of oral polio vaccine, the agencies said, but “achieving this goal is now unlikely due to access limitations.”

They say 90% of children in any community should be vaccinated to prevent the spread of the disease.

The campaign was launched after the first case of polio in 25 years was reported in Gaza – a 10-month-old boy now paralyzed in his legs.

The WHO said the presence of a case of paralysis indicated there could be hundreds more who were infected but showed no symptoms.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants invaded southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping another 250.

Israel’s offensive has killed more than 43,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials, who did not say how many were fighters but said more than half were women and children.
