October is a month of national health literacy. Health literacy refers to people’s ability to find, understand and use information and services to make informed health decisions and actions for themselves and others.

The development of personal health literacy is the ability to be, understand and use health information and services-something that can begin at the beginning of life.
“The Mayo Clinic is really a health expert. And we have the opportunity to be there to talk to children, to excite them from our health and to empower them to have an agency for their own health and the health of their communities, “says Dr. Matke.
Dr. Matke says these types of books provide accessible information about a wide range of health and science topics.
“I think there are many health topics that children are struggling to understand – everything from immunizations to why they feel sick, especially when children have serious and complex diseases,” says Dr. Matke.
Understanding their illness can help them feel empowered and knowing how they can participate in their care. But not only children with serious health can benefit from this education.
“My children have read all these books and have read them many times and many times. So, they can help understand these diseases. It is inspiring their passion to learn more about science and to learn more about health, “says Dr. Matke.
Which is another goal of promoting health literacy in children.
“We have to get children to be interested in STEM – science, engineering, technology and medicine. And these are really important topics. So, we present these topics to children to interest them at the oldest age and to inspire this passion. “Says Dr. Matke.
