ICONS Highlights rally to support the University of Nevada, Reno women’s volleyball team in defense of justice and fair play on the court

The Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS) has announced its support for an upcoming rally featuring the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) women’s volleyball team. On Oct. 26, the team will publicly discuss its decision to forfeit its game against San Jose State University (SJSU), citing safety and fairness concerns about SJSU starting a transidentified male athlete on the women’s team.

“Our decision not to compete against San Jose State is a defense of the rights of female athletes everywhere.” We are here to show that the integrity of women’s sports is not up for debate,” said the UNR volleyball team captain Sia Lily.

This public stance against injustice in Women’s Mountain West Conference volleyball is a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight to maintain fairness, safety and equal opportunity in women’s athletics. The free, family-friendly rally is open to the media and public and will be streamed live X here

“This rally and the position of the UNR team is about more than one game. They are about protecting the principles of fairness and equality that should define all women’s sports. I applaud their decision to stand firm in their beliefs in protecting fair sports,” said the SJSU volleyball captain and plaintiff in a lawsuit against the NCAA Brooke Slusser.

“By BOYCOTTING a match that undermines fair play, the women of Nevada Reno are taking a clear stand against the erosion of our playing field. Men have no place in women’s sports – on the court or in the locker room. No exceptions,” they said Riley Gaines.
