After a year for the junior and volleyball teams of the Northern Hastings high school, both teams pulled out some important victories to reach the Quinte Bay Championship held on February 10 in Belville. Junior Girls were ready to play Trenton for the fifth place a week earlier, but the game was delayed due to adverse weather and was placed to play in the morning at the Bay of Quinte tournament. The victory would mean that they would stay and the loss would send them packing. The junior girls, led by their captain Bryin Kilpatrick, gathered to defeat Trenton in three straight sets, 25-18, 25-12 and 25-13, providing them with a place in the tournament.
Then the youth had to play the strong team from St. Theresa, who continued to win the tournament. Although the girls fought hard, they lost in three straight sets. 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19. Their second game was against East Nortumberland, a team they didn’t run through all season, so they didn’t know what to expect. As they played their hearts, they lost in two straight sets 25-13 and 25-21 and missed the qualification for the Central Ontario Championship. Coach Janet Boshamp said the team “competed well and had great gaps for some difficult service … [and] They fought to the last point, “she said, adding that she was” very proud of volleyball played by her team “this season.
The senior girls had an almost identical day with the junior team. They also had a game from 9am before the St. Paul tournament. Guided by their captains Jessica Boyd and Caitlin Walker, they also gathered to defeat St. Paul in Straight Sets 25-11,25-19 and 25-6, winning the tournament. Next, they were confronted with some difficult competition, such as the best Quinte Christian team and the second team of St. Theresa’s loss in straight sets both 25-10, 25-22, 25-13 and 25 -13 and 25-22 respectively.
Alex Komi, a senior coach, said that despite the heavy losses at the Quinte Bay tournament, the girls “had a great season”, which graduated from the fourth in their division with a record of 3-3. “Our goal this season,” Komi said, “it was to remain competitive in a very difficult league while learning and growing as a group. This led us to our first Kwinte Bay tournament for five years, which was an incredible achievement for girls. Throughout the year, we fought hard and worked hard to reach the level of success we did. “Corey thanks to assistant coach Crystal Gray and Chip Gilis for their dedication to the team, and he also wanted to thank the parents who helped to attract the girls to their games.” I look forward to next season while trying to achieve Even bigger goals, “he said.
