HS FOOTBALL: Three WVC teams alive in district playoffs – Wilkes-Barre Citizens Voice

HS FOOTBALL: Three WVC teams alive in district playoffs – Wilkes-Barre Citizens Voice

Ten Wyoming Valley Conference football teams entered the postseason Friday night and only three survived.

Wilkes-Barre Area will play Williamsport for the District 2-4 Class 6A subregional championship. Dallas will travel to play Valley View for the District 2 Class 4A title in a rematch of last year’s championship game won by Dallas. In District 2, Class 3A, Wyoming Area will make the return trip to Western Wayne to face the Wildcats in a semifinal game.

We meet again

Two of the three games featuring WVC teams on Friday will be rematches of regular season games.

Wyoming Area plays Western Wayne for the second time this season. In Week 3, the Warriors lost to Western Wayne 34-23. The 23 points the Warriors scored in that game were their fewest all season.

In the 6A sub-regional championship, Wilkes-Barre Area will play Williamsport for the second time in three weeks. Williamsport beat Williamsport, 34-20, in Week 10. In that game, Wilkes-Barre Area led 14-3 at the half and 20-13 heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Millionaires scored 21 unanswered points to win the game.

Closer and closer

Wyoming-area running back Lidge Kellum is closing in on another milestone: 2,000 yards rushing on the season. The senior has 1,951 yards entering Friday night’s game.

Kellum is averaging 10.7 yards per carry and has 25 rushing touchdowns. Kellum is part of what is becoming a three-headed monster in the backcourt for the Warriors. Trustin Johnson has 408 yards rushing and averages 7.3 yards per carry. Michael Crane saw his workload increase and had 222 yards on 31 carries. He averages 7.2 yards per carry.

Play it back

Berwick closed out the regular season by winning three of its last four games. The Bulldogs gave Western Wayne all they could handle in the Class 3A quarterfinals on Friday, falling on the road 7-0.

But consider this season a learning experience for first-time Berwick coach CJ Curry. He will return next season with one of the most dynamic running backs in the conference in Ty’Meere Wilkerson. After starting the season as a receiver, Curry moved him to running back and Wilkerson finished with 1,438 yards and 16 touchdowns while averaging 11.0 yards per carry.

Now there are two

With Jason Majiros stepping down as head coach at Hanover Area, there are two Wyoming Valley Conference head coaching openings. Nanticoke Area is also looking for a new leader.

First time for everything

I have been covering high school football for nearly 30 years. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you really haven’t. There was a brief delay early in the third quarter Friday night between Honesdale and Dallas. It wasn’t injury, fan or player related.

Instead, the suspension was due to a drone flying over Mountaineer Stadium. Drones are prohibited and the stadium is considered a no-fly zone. The drone eventually flew away, but again, it was definitely something different.
