How to Stay Fit and Balanced During the Holiday Season – Athletech News

Here are some expert tips from Chuze Fitness’ Senior Fitness Director on how to stay active and healthy during the holidays

As the holiday season quickly approaches, so does stress, holiday parties, and high-calorie desserts. Even the most dedicated fitness and wellness fans can find it challenging to stay on track this time of year, but Dana Gilbert, Senior Director of Fitness at Chuze Fitness, has some valuable tips to keep you healthy and active this holiday season.

Staying motivated to exercise during such a busy time of year is no small feat, but Gilbert says making time for the gym pays off in several ways for clients and members.

“The exercise options are endless and will support your well-being with increased energy, improved mood, better sleep and reduced stress,” she says. “Not every workout has to be hours-long, sweaty, and muscle-tiring, but being intentional about staying active is!”

Taking time to create a “menu of movement and mindset” can also help those who feel overwhelmed this time of year, Gilbert says.

It offers the following “menu”:

Appetizer – Move your body for 10-20 minutes

  • Enjoy a brisk walk outside, dress appropriately, and grab a friend.
  • Do a series of gentle stretching movements, breathing deeply in and out. Your joints will thank you when you feel your body waking up.
  • Set a timer and perform a series of three bodyweight exercises with ten repetitions each, repeating until the timer beeps. Try squats, lunges and burpees together; they are sure to get your heart pumping.

Main dish – Give yourself time

  • Take your favorite class format at the gym – dance, strength, kickboxing, yoga or pilates classes. Or try the excellent hybrid fitness option. This trend encourages us to choose our training destination. You can find your favorite class on a virtual site and work out at home or go to the gym for your class.
  • Try another fun trend, “Cozy Cardio,” that might put a smile on your face. This approach to cardio has a more laid-back vibe that’s great for the busy season, too!

Dessert – Give yourself a positive mindset about exercise

  • Always remember that some movement is much better than no movement at all. The joy and satisfaction of completing a workout, no matter how short, are steps taken toward staying active during the holidays and being healthier and happier.
  • Create a personal timeline and track your winter workouts. If you normally schedule three weekly workouts and set your November-December goal to 2 days, go digital and track on your wearable. Do we risk going old school and putting a smiley face sticker on our paper calendar when we mark the time to exercise? The things that motivate us are very personal. Find yours!
  • Reward yourself at the end of your schedule with a new pair of tights, sneakers or gym wear to track your progress in the new year.

Gilbert also emphasizes the importance of hydration during the holidays, along with proper nutrition.

“Even amid all the delicious and festive drinks, make water the liquid of choice,” she advises. “Drink plenty of water during the winter months. Keep your water bottle full and close at hand. It won’t let you down and will help keep your body in regulation.”

When it comes to holiday gatherings, Gilbert suggests filling your plate with healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, but giving up—in moderation.

“If this treat is calling your name, enjoy a small portion,” she says.

In addition to engaging in movement and nourishing meal options, Gilbert encourages consistency and finding quiet time at the end of the day.

“Prioritize your sleep by keeping your bedtime routine as close to normal as possible,” she says. “If you usually go to bed at 10 at night and wake up at 6 in the morning, keep it up.”

Most importantly, Gilbert says finding balance is key during the holidays.

“Your workout routine can feel tested and your motivation tested, so find it in the season itself,” she says. “You don’t have to completely abandon your training routine to enjoy what the season has to offer.”
