However, the leader of minorities in the House of Drew Stokesbari, a Republican, sees him differently. He believes that change is a direct response to the governor’s speech, calling it “revenge”.
The new rule is part of a set of permanent rules that were approved last Friday to manage how MPs work in the current and next session. Changes in the rule cover a wide range of topics, how long legislators can talk to debate to a ban on Vaping in the House. Usually these changes are insignificant, but the session on Friday saw some more noticeable revisions.
For example, the rule that said, “The governor (or designers or both),” will now just say the Governor. Another change makes it easier for the Democrats to end Republican philibusters. Usually a two -thirds vote were needed to stop Philibuster, but now it will make a simple majority that Democrats could easily achieve as they hold 59 out of 98 seats.
Republicans, including Stokesbari, criticized the change, arguing that it set the convenience of the majority of minority rights. Stokesbari suggested that if the Democrats were worried about the lack of time, they should start working earlier.
Another change prohibits the bills on “only the title”, which were previously filed only with a title and number, leaving room for last -minute legislation, often related to the budget. They will no longer be allowed in the chamber or in the Senate.
The new rules note a change in the balance of power in Washington’s legislature, as Democrats make changes to meet their majority.
