Hegt renamed a military base in North Carolina Fort Roland L. Bragg – Fox 5 Las Vegas

Washington (AP) – Defense Minister Pete Heget signed an order on Monday, restoring the name of historical special operations based in Fort Brag. North Carolina’s base was renamed Fort Liberty in 2023 as part of national efforts under the Biden administration to eliminate names that honor the Confederation leaders.

The original namesake on the base, General Braxton Bragg, was a general of the Confederation from Warnton, North Carolina, who was known for having slaves and losing key civil war battles contributing to the fall of the Confederation.

However, the Pentagon spokesman said heget was renaming the base in honor of PFC. Roland L. Brag, whom he said was a World War II hero who won the silver star and the purple heart because of his exceptional courage during the Battle of the Blut.

“This change emphasizes the heritage of the installation to recognize those who have demonstrated exclusive service and victim for the nation,” spokesman John Ullot said in a statement.

The election of the private first class of World War II surrounded a law forbidding the military to name a base after the Confederation leader.

In a video he posted on X, announcing that he was renaming the base, Heget said, “That’s right. Brag is back! “

In fact, the base was still widely known as Bragg, the new name didn’t really get caught. On the first official heget day as the Secretary of Defense, he made sense to call him Fort Brag in his first exchange with reporters.
