Greg Caton takes over the municipal corps following the appointment of the City Council

The Scottsdale City Council has appointed Greg Caton as interim city manager.
Mr. Catton, who has been one of Scottsdale’s assistant city managers since May 2024, steps in as interim city manager, succeeding Bill Murphy, who briefly served in that capacity upon the departure of Jim Thompson in December , has retired, according to a news release.
Mr. Caton is a native Coloradan with extensive experience in municipal government.
Prior to his tenure in Scottsdale, he spent eight years as city manager in Grand Junction, Colorado. His previous experience also includes time as city manager in Oro Valley, Arizona and eight years as assistant city manager in Durango, Colorado, the release said.
Mr. Cato holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Fort Lewis College in Durango and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Colorado at Denver.
He is a Certified City Manager through the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and is an active local government professional involved in state multilevel groups.
Mr. Catton assumed the role of Scottsdale’s interim city manager on January 14.
