Greet our heroes: Body who feeds body struggle at Washburn University – Wibw

Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) – The war against nutritional uncertainty continues and one program has been on the first line of 10 years.

Bods Bods Nutrition works to feed the Washburn Community.

“He was launched in 2014 by a student who did a study on the campus and found that 50% of the study participants had experienced nutritional insecurity at one time or another during their time at Washburn,” says Molly Stafs-Herman, BFB adviser.

In the 10th years thereafter, the closet grew for one purpose: that no student, employee or teacher was starving.

“There are many studies that show that the experience of nutritional uncertainty has a direct impact on our mental health, our academic performance, our working results,” said Steffs-Herman. “So when we have teachers and staff who are struggling to afford to feed themselves and their families, we are looking for ways to ease this stress.”

Student workers Kacee Doonan and Evelyn Woitalewicz say that working in the closet means more than providing food.

“It’s fun to meet many new people, many new people who enter, are from other countries, so it’s cool to just meet other people,” Donan said. “There was a girl who came in and she asked me how to prepare a turkey and it was just very cool to hear, because it was her first Thanksgiving day, so she was really cool.”

“Someone will come in and I’m terrified with names, but someone will come in and I will be like” I know your name, thank God, “said Vitalyuch. “And it’s just so fun to have this kind of personal connection with them because you understand what they are going through and they understand that you are there to help. It’s just so amazing to be, not be able to recognize people, but know that they know you are there for them. “

The closet has helped hundreds over the years and their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

“We asked students to write small notes on what it means that Bods power supply bods for them and we had so many huge positive answers for you, you know as” I was so scared that I would not be able to feed my child, “I was worried I would have worried I have to take extra hours of work and miss a class or miss on time to study because I couldn’t afford to eat, “said Stefs-Herman.

And they hope that this impact remains.

“The closet is not a lot of things that have a college campus, so I think it’s really amazing that we have one here and that it is available to all students when they need it when we are open and just like here for them , as far as we can be. We’re just trying to be the main one to help them, “Votavic said.

Bods Feeding Bods is donated -based and open to the entire Washburn community. Support their cause here or learn more about the BFB program here.
