TThe Barry Goldvoter boys’ football team continues to continue its profitable ways, boasting a record of 9-1-1-4 February-with the playoffs approaching. Guided by chief trainer Hector Moreno, the team demonstrates the ability to win games in different ways, including 10-0 blowing against Mingus Union and 2-1 nails against Greenway.

Last year, the program reached the state playoff of AIA 4A, where it eventually lost 1-0 to Mica Mountain. The 11-seed bulldogs made their imprint in the previous games, but upset 6-seeded wells and 3-seed AZ College Prep on the way to the semi-finals. Moreno said that the diverse style of the team is a big factor for their success.

“We like to have the ball. We like to own the ball and build from it instead of being more direct, “Moreno said. “I don’t just like to kick the ball and attack.”

A significant difference between high school football and other football programs, such as club teams or academies, is the tactical approach. With many high school players who play other sports or club teams, most teams resort to a game that do not require much team chemistry, such as starting the ball as much as possible, and download it. Moreno chose to include the entire team, a philosophy that he believes defines the program.

“When you play a more direct attack, you somehow expect a player to do the job and finish the game,” Moreno said. “I really believe (our style of play) has succeeded. You don’t just rely on a player to do it. “

Junior Aader Eninas and Senior Dennis Bekrick led the evaluation department with a combined 31 goals between them this season. Senior goalkeeper Zahari Mreskovski was a brick wall on the net, combining his defense for six interruptions during the year. Moreno said that although these veterans are team leaders, much of the success of the program is their ability to feel confident in young talents.

“As a team, we are never afraid to start a freshman in Varsit if we feel that he is ready for the challenge,” Moreno said. “This year we have a primary freshman and several sophomores; So this is just based on the program, not only plays this season, but also thinking forward. “
