Glendale residents fight to save 107-year-old library – Arizona family

GLENDALE, Arizona (AZ Family)— The city of Glendale’s oldest library may soon be torn down, but residents are fighting to save it.

The Velma Teague Library has a long history. It was rebuilt and restored in 1971. The library is named after former town librarian and teacher Velma.

For 107 years, there has always been a library in Murphy Park.

However, the city says the necessary repairs will cost $5 million and the repairs will cost more than $17 million.

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, members agreed to move the library down the street to a city-owned building near 58th Avenue and Palmer.

Some local library lovers argue that tearing it down would be like taking away a key part of the city.

“This library is so important to the people of our community. The families, the children who come here. Then they come here to the local restaurant. This is just our home. This is exactly what we are and they want to take it away from us,” said Glendale resident Rory Gorey.

The council must still vote at a later date to make the decision official.
