The City Council approved the increase on February 11. Here’s what this means to the residents.

Gilbert, Arizona – citizens in Gilbert will pay over 80% more for some of their utilities starting in April.

The Gilbert Municipal Council voted to approve the change of interest for utilities for wastewater on February 11. The monthly housing bill is currently $ 33. From April, residents will pay $ 62. This is an increase of 87.8% per month and will amount to approximately $ 350 a year. According to the city, tariffs will not increase in 2026.

According to literature from the city of Gilbert, provided to 12news by a citizen of Gilbert, who wants to remain anonymous, the funds raised from the increase of the rate will go to four main areas:

  1. Rehabilitation
  2. Corrosion Control/Odor
  3. Service criticism
  4. Efficiency and safety

“It is essential to increase funding to maintain our critical sewer system, as proactive investment is crucial to preventing problems that could be catastrophic and disrupting the safety, well -being and quality of life of our community,” The city said.

The City Council had two funding options to choose from at the Tuesday night. One who was the plan chosen was a variant of all the Western ones.

“This allows the city to finance completely critical capital projects without offering debt, guaranteeing financial health for future operations,” the city said.

The second option was a plan for “gradual cash/bond (debt)”. This proposal would use a $ 110 million bond to finance improvement projects, which led to an increase of $ 8.73 in April 2025 and another increase in April 2026 with an additional $ 5.52. The change would be a 24% increase and then a 14% increase, respectively.

“This will require the city to pay interest on the debt, but it will smooth out the transition to higher rates,” the city said.

The Advisory Board for Public Affairs, which consists of nine residents of the city, recommended that the council choose the option for all money, according to the city.

“We understand that increasing the percentage is never popular, but we firmly believe that this solution is the most sensible for the city of Gilbert,” said PWAB chairman Sam Elliot in a letter to the Council.

The water rate will also increase in April due to a pre -approved 25% increase, reaching about $ 12 more per month.
