Garland Fire Service praised the couple for the transmission of a newborn under the Moses Act – NBC DFW

The crew of the Garland Fire Station No. 7 usually rushes to a call.

Last Thursday, the call came to their doorstep – a young mother with a baby on her arms.

“It was a newborn, born probably in the last few hours,” says James Douger with Garland Fire.

The mother and her boyfriend told firefighters that they were unable to care for the child.

The paramedics checked Mom and Baby before they brought both to the hospital.

“They received a word from the hospital that the baby was in perfect health and that Mom was stable and everyone was doing well,” Duger said.

Usually called the Baby Moses Act, parents have the ability to safely hand over newborns in Texas.

There are no questions and there are no consequences as long as the baby is 60 days or more junior and not hurt. The law was signed by governor George W. Bush in 1999.

“I would like to praise parents for the choice they made. This is a difficult solution for every parent and stop and think about what they could do in this situation, instead of abandoning or harming the baby, they made the right decision, “Dugger said.

The numbers provided by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services show since September 2024, two newborns have been abandoned with five transmitted.

In the previous fiscal year, 18 newborns were abandoned, more than 14 transmitted under the Baby Moses law.

“If there is a young couple or a young mother alone, who thinks she has nothing to do with their baby, there is an option. This is a great safe option to give this baby a chance in a normal healthy life, “Douger said.

According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, newborns will be placed in the temporary care of the state while working on finding a permanent family.
